Character Analysis: Juggernaut
Juggernaut
In case you were wondering…
There have been a few characters who have notably taken the role of Juggernaut aside from just Cain Marko, most prominently Colossus and the Living Monolith. As detailed below, Juggernaut’s power varies based on how much power Cyttorak gives him most of the time, and at his peak Cain Marko has been given more power by Cyttorak than any other host, meaning it should be reasonable to include feats performed by these other characters as examples of what Cain could do at his strongest. I’ll also be including feats performed by other disciples of Cyttorak and other users of the Gem of Cyttorak for comprehensiveness, though the specifics of how each showing correlates to Cain will be described on a case-by-case basis
Cain Marko has been amped with alternative power sources a few times. These aren’t standard and shouldn’t be applied, but they have all in some way altered his link with Cyttorak, resulting in a fluctuation in power

Has a soft spot for children
Cain Marko was born the son of Doctor Kurt Marko and his wife Marjory Marko. When Cain was only three years old, his mother died, leaving him to be raised by Kurt alone, who would send him to boarding school. Kurt was a researcher on the illicit Black Womb Project, a government-funded project with the goal of studying genetic mutations, experimenting on countless mutant babies and children. It was at this project where Kurt would become colleagues with Dr. Brian Xavier, father of Charles Xavier. Kurt was maddeningly jealous of Brian’s wealth, so when an explosion tore through the nuclear research facility they were working at, Kurt chose not to save Brian, leaving him to die. Soon after, Kurt seduced Brian’s grieving wife, Sharon, marrying her and securing Brian’s wealth for himself.
As a result of this new marriage, Cain moved in with Kurt to the Xavier estate, and became step-brothers with Charles. Cain was already brutish and arrogant, and the sudden introduction of a sibling to his life didn’t help. Unbeknownst to Cain, Charles had awakened to his mutant powers of telepathy, allowing him to read the minds of all those around him, and so excelled in school as a result. Charles constantly came home with trophies from sporting competitions and top-ranked grades, and Cain could do nothing but feel inferior as he struggled through his academics. Making it worse was the constant abuse Cain suffered at the hands of his father. Kurt made it no secret that he preferred Charles as a son, and would regularly lash out at Cain, horrifically beating him and letting out his rage. Cain didn’t know Charles was suffering the same abuse as well, and so could only suffer in solitude, every beating serving as a reminder of how Charles was more successful, and every hit making Cain’s hatred of his brother grow.
Sharon died of heart-break later on, leaving Cain with no-one to turn to. Enraged, he would eventually confront his father directly, accusing him of having a hand in the accident that caused Brian’s death, right in front of Charles. Cain spilled over some of his father’s chemicals during the argument, triggering an explosive chain reaction which blew away Cain, Kurt, and Charles. In his dying breaths, Kurt performed the most unselfish act of his life, carrying away his two sons from the fire to safety, admitting to Charles that he could have saved Brian but chose not to, before dying from his injuries. Cain Marko and Charles Xavier were now completely alone, Cain’s hatred of Xavier only increasing even further in the wake of his father’s death.
Their paths would ultimately diverge as they grew into adults, up until the Korean War. Cain and Xavier happened to serve in the same platoon of soldiers during the conflict, holed up together under the assault of enemy fire. Cain ended up making a run for it, with Xavier chasing after his brother into the cave he escaped to. They had unknowingly stumbled into the secret temple of Cyttorak, an ancient demonic god, and were drawn to the mystical Crimson Gem of Cyttorak within, an ancient ruby which would grant whoever touched it godly power. The gem sought Xavier as its host, but Cain got to it first, pushing his brother away and reciting the scripture: “Whosoever touches this gem shall possess the power of the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. Henceforth, you who read these words shall become forevermore a human juggernaut.” With this, Cain was transformed, as the magical energies of the ruby enveloped his body, empowering him and bulking him up. Xavier wouldn’t get to see the full results of his brother’s transformation though, as at that moment the mountain they were in was shelled by enemy forces. Xavier managed to escape, but Cain was buried under countless tons of rubble from the collapsing mountain.
It took years before Cain dug his way out of the mountain with his new powers. Xavier sought to fulfil his dream of mutant-human coexistence during this time, and so assembled the X-Men, a team of young mutants he would tutor to act as superheroes, taking the name Professor X. Cain emerged from the mountain with nothing but thoughts of revenge against his brother for his mind, both for abandoning him in the mountain and as a way to fulfil his grudge against his brother as they were growing up. Befitting his new powers, which made him practically invulnerable and absurdly physically powerful due to his link with Cyttorak, and armed with a powerful set of armour, Cain took the name Juggernaut, and headed to Xavier’s mansion to destroy his brother. The Juggernaut was defeated and repelled by Xavier’s X-Men, ultimately being sealed in the dimension of the gem of Cyttorak by the team in their second encounter. Even after escaping, Juggernaut suffered nothing but continuous defeats at the hand of Xavier’s mutant team in his quest for revenge.
Cain eventually gained a partner-in-crime in the form of Black Tom Cassidy, a fellow adversary of the X-Men. While at first just a partnership out of convenience for Tom, they quickly grew to become legitimate friends, with Juggernaut even choosing to abandon a battle with the X-Men in order to save Tom on multiple occassions. During this period, Cain would be sucked into the alternate dimension of the Ultraverse, where he would take on a more heroic role for the first time with his new teammates, the Exiles, as he fell in love with member Amber Hunt. Upon returning to the main universe, Juggernaut would suffer a humiliating defeat at the hands of Onslaught, who later trapped him in his own gem and severed his powers. Juggernaut returned more powerful than ever, and would come to outright defy Cyttorak’s will, turning against him in his wager to plunge the entire planet into a devastating war and saving the world. Cyttorak, understandably, didn’t like that very much, and began steadily depowering Cain during this era, making him significantly weaker.
Around this time, Black Tom’s mutant powers began spiralling out of control, mutating him into a living tree monster who instinctively lashed out at all those around him. Seeing no other option to help his friend, Cain turned to his former adversaries, the X-Men, and asked them to help him save Tom. After being saved from near-death by a young fish-like mutant, Sammy, Cain realised that he wanted to be on the side of good for real, and became a member of the X-Men, developing an almost parental relationship with Sammy. Cain still struggled with his anger issues and the trauma of the abuse he suffered, but he finally found a healthy outlet for it, and even began to repair his relationship with Xavier. That was until the X-Men were attacked by the new Brotherhood of Evil, with Sammy ultimately dying at the hands of Black Tom himself, fully possessed by his madness. Cain was driven into a rage, and sacrificed himself to defeat the Brotherhood, ensuring they were all sucked into a singularity that had formed in the mansion.
After some misadventures in the alternate dimension of the Mojoverse he was sucked into, Cain returned to Earth, and joined up with the newly-formed Excalibur in order to aid the many mutants depowered in the wake of M-Day. Unfortunately for Cain, all these heroics were going against the desires of Cyttorak, who wanted the Juggernaut to cause as much destruction as possible, meaning Cain was getting weaker everyday, to the point where he was insecure about his own abilities to be useful for his team. Cain ultimately gave in to Cyttorak’s wishes in order to stop the rampaging World War Hulk, restored to his full power and acting as the destructive, villainous Juggernaut once more, even making an attempt on Xavier’s life as his grudge resurfaced. For all his actions, Cain landed in the Raft prison, and became a part of Luke Cage’s new Thunderbolts team of prisoners-on-parole.
While working with the Thunderbolts, Juggernaut was possessed by the Hammer of Kuurth, turning him into a servant of the Asgardian Serpent, Cul, and making him truly unstoppable. Cyttorak didn’t appreciate that Cain was now causing destruction in the name of a different god, and so finally completely depowered Cain, turning him back to normal, while making the X-Men member Colossus his new Juggernaut. No longer a hero or villain, Cain could at last live in peace, spending his days as a humble farmer. When he heard the call of Cyttorak’s gem once more, he rushed over to destroy it before it could find a new avatar, but was ultimately chosen by Cyttorak to become the Juggernaut once more, giving him enough power to seek revenge on Scott Summers, the man who killed Xavier.
Even still, some part of Cain still genuinely wanted to be a hero, and he would ultimately ally himself with the X-Men once more. After having his power removed yet again, he rejected Cyttorak once and for all, utilising a new armour made out of the Crimson Bands on Earth. Now truly independent, Cain began working with Damage Control to aid in reconstruction efforts in the wake of superhero battles, and even founded his own team of former villains, the Unstoppables, in order to aid against institutional abuse of convicts in the hopes of allowing other supervillains to reform. For his efforts, Cain was allowed into the mutant utopia of Krakoa, currently serving as a member of Nightcrawler’s Legionaries and reconciling with both Xavier and Black Tom. Cain Marko has been many things, from villain to hero to somewhere in-between, but all that hides an abused and wounded soul. And with the power of the Juggernaut, Cain makes sure nobody can hurt him like that ever again.
Experience
The timeline of Marvel comics is obviously somewhat vague and ill-defined due to Marvel’s sliding timescale. You could reasonably say though that Cain has operated as the Juggernaut for at least over a decade, and has experience fighting against many different kinds of opponents, both on his own and as a member of a team. Still, Juggernaut is somewhat infamous for his lack of intelligence, being defeated many times by trickery that turns his powers against him, and he’s been outright called an idiot multiple times in-universe.
That’s not to say he’s completely vulnerable to being tricked by smarter characters though. He’s fought and defeated several skilled and intelligent characters with large amounts of experience of their own and is plenty capable of adapting to compensate for his weaknesses. Most notably, Cain acted as the leader of the Unstoppables, where he showed some pretty solid intelligence and planning feats, that allowed him to defeat enemies as unpredictable and powerful as the Human-Adaptoid.
Skill and Intelligence
Notes he has experience with being outnumbered, a single foe against many
Uses the hand-grips on Guardian’s armour to pull him in and deliver a finishing blow
Lifts Rhino up to prevent him from having leverage and afford an opening
Through his experience, manages to briefly subdue Starkweather. Cain says he has maybe half the power of Starkweather, and is still beating him
Catches the blade of one of Cyttorak’s disciples in his hand, before beating and nearly killing him. This disciple is stated to have a background in martial arts
Even when blinded by Dazzler’s light, he relies on his hearing to figure out where she is
After being launched into the sky, punches Albion while mid-air
Punches and slams King Hyperion into the ground, mentioning how he was inspired by Ali’s rope-a-dope
Manages to grab Wolverine off his back and throw him into the other X-Men
Battles and defeats Conquest. Conquest is noted as being an extremely skilled fighting machine, and was capable of somewhat tussling with Captain America, who instead chose to exploit her lack of teamwork
Performs a fastball special with Nocturne, and later with Punisher
Low-End Showings
By turning back to human form, Colossus is able to wiggle out of Juggernaut’s grip
Skin’s elasticity allows him to break out of Juggernaut’s grip
Iceman says Juggernaut is an idiot, and can be taken down by telepaths without his helmet
Cain mentions that he almost went crazy the last time he was stuck in an alternate dimension

Crimson Gem of Cyttorak
Also known as the “Ruby of Cyttorak” or just “Gem of Cyttorak”, this magical ruby was created by Cyttorak, and is the source of the Juggernaut’s powers, turning anybody who touches it into an avatar of Cyttorak. This grants them the powers of the Juggernaut, and increases their physical mass and size, capable of turning even a child into a hulking brute. It’s usually located in the Temple of Cyttorak in South Korea.
The gem can be used on its own for numerous unique functions, such as teleportation or telepathy. It’s frequently used as a sort of link to the Crimson Cosmos, the alternate realm Cyttorak rules over. Cain Marko has occasionally carried it on his person, and has sometimes even bonded to it outright. “Fake” versions of the gem exist, and Cyttorak can create/summon the real gem at will. The Crimson Cosmos itself contains a “prototype” version of the ruby, which Jean Grey and Cyclops used to weaken Juggernaut’s power and seal him in the Crimson Cosmos.
The backstory on the Gem of Cyttorak varies a bit. The initial explanation was that the ruby’s power came when the destructive aspect of Cyttorak was sealed inside a ruby, causing Cyttorak to curse it to turn anyone who touched it into one of his avatars. A later comic says the gem was created a millenia ago by Cyttorak directly in a wager with the Octessence, seeking an avatar on Earth he could spread his influence through. The Marvel Handbook reconciles this by saying that the Gem of Cyttorak was created first in the wager with the Octessence, and then had Cyttorak’s destructive aspect sealed in it later on, occasionally transporting it to the outside world from its guarded temple to find an avatar. It also makes it clear that the Crimson Cosmos always existed, and that Cyttorak rules over it.
Mechanics
As said above, Juggernaut has at various points in his history bonded with the Gem of Cyttorak outright, increasing his strength and ensuring it can’t be taken by anyone else. The following is the timeline of the gem, chronicling when it’s bonded to Juggernaut, when it isn’t, and other users of it.
Cain Marko touched the gem of Cyttorak in the temple in Korea, turning him into Juggernaut
The prototype ruby of Cyttorak emits rays which take away Juggernaut’s powers and weaken him. The prototype is described in a handbook as being a “counterpart” to the Gem of Cyttorak
Cain takes the true crimson gem of Cyttorak from its temple and uses it to empower Black Tom when he touches it, bulking him up. Rogue briefly drains Black Tom’s power, taking his Juggernaut powers and causing her to grow in size, though it soon returns to the gem of Cyttorak. She also drains Juggernaut’s powers before the power fades from her and returns to the gem of Cyttorak. Touching the gem returns Juggernaut’s powers to him
By touching the ruby of Cyttorak, the Juggernaut’s power is split between Black Tom and Marko, giving Marko only half of his normal power. This reduced power causes Juggernaut to appear smaller. Note that the Marvel Handbook states that the assessment that Marko and Cassidy, when they both had the power of the Gem of Cyttorak, had half of Marko’s original power is inaccurate, as Juggernaut’s previous power level was “virtually immeasurable”. Take that how you will.
Juggernaut throws the gem of Cyttorak into orbit so nobody else can take its power. Nova, the herald of Galactus, ends up knocking the ruby out of orbit and back down to Earth, landing in the hands of a human boy named Stevie. Cain sought to reclaim the Ruby of Cyttorak from Stevie, but was defeated by the boy and the Hulk. He eventually regained possession of the gem and bonded with it to ensure its safety, enhancing his power further. He later describes the ruby as the source of his powers
When Juggernaut destroyed the gem of Cyttorak and freed himself and Spite, his soul became the vessel for its power, meaning he merges once again with the gem of Cyttorak
A fake second gem of Cyttorak exists in Korea, which Juggernaut attempts to gain, but it turns out to be a trick, with the gem being powerless. The gem instead drains all his crimson energy, and he ultimately has his power returned to him when Gambit recovers the gem in Korea and gives it to him
In Cyttorak’s temple in South Korea, the Gem of Cyttorak exists. Cyttorak forces Juggernaut to go through a trial if he wants to obtain it and restore his powers. Cain ends up taking the Gem of Cyttorak from Korea and keeping it in his bag, and in a fight with World War Hulk, grabs the gem and embraces his role as the Juggernaut, empowering him back to full strength and giving him his armour
It’s unclear how this works with Juggernaut absorbing the gem before this. I could find no real explanation for why the gem was no longer bonded to him directly. The best I can figure is that Cyttorak removed it from his body as punishment for disobeying him, as this was during the era where Juggernaut was weakened
Cyttorak’s avatars kept failing, and the gem was ultimately lost. The gem is once again in the Temple of Cyttorak in Korea, and sends out a call to find a new avatar. Living Monolith touches the ruby and becomes the Juggernaut, but this soon fades, and Cain becomes the Juggernaut once more
Casey Kinmont is gifted with a Crimson Gem of Cyttorak, which makes her unstoppable
Later on, Magik, in her demonic Darkchylde form, rips out the gem of Cyttorak from within Juggernaut’s body before crushing it, severing his power and turning him back to normal. It’s revealed later that the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak has been reduced to chips and dust. Magik ripping the gem out of his body could imply Cain bonded to it after he became Juggernaut again, or it could be her using Juggernaut’s body as a conduit to reach and grab the gem
Dimensional Travel
The Official Marvel Handbook suggests that the Crimson Cosmos either exists within or can be accessed from the Gem of Cyttorak. It’s been used numerous times to either travel to or seal someone within the Crimson Cosmos, and has also displayed dimension warping capabilities across Earth itself.
The Ancient One seals Xorak inside the dimension of the ruby
The gem contains a “universe” inside it, which Cyclops and Jean Grey enter
The prototype ruby of Cyttorak seals itself and Juggernaut in the Crimson Cosmos inside the gem
Onslaught imprisons Juggernaut, body and soul, within the Gem of Cyttorak
Gomurr uses his magic to enter the dimension inside the ruby
Gomurr and Tar sealed the destructive aspect of Cyttorak within a ruby, which he cursed to grant anyone who touched it his power as the Juggernaut (note that while this explanation for the Gem of Cyttorak’s origins is contradicted later on, the sealing aspect still happened)
Crimson Cosmos
The Crimson Cosmos is described as being an entire separate plane of reality Cyttorak rules over, where time flows differently, like it’s stopped completely. The Crimson Cosmos contains ageless people and tribes within it, and demons like the temptress Spite. It’s also linked to the Netherworld, a dimension filled with demonic monsters. It’s said that Cyttorak was banished to the dimension of the Crimson Cosmos long ago, and the Cosmos is his domain, empowering him while he’s in it.
After being sealed, Xorak managed to harness and master the energies of the Crimson Cosmos
Jean’s watch apparently disrupted the Crimson Cosmos’s timeless nature when Strange transported her there, causing Xorak to crumble to dust
The Crimson Cosmos Juggernaut is trapped in is described as a “vast, endless void”
The gem of Cyttorak contains an alternate plane of reality of fire and volcanoes
The demon exists in the Netherworld, which Scott and Jean passed through when first visiting the realm of Cyttorak. A fissure connecting it to the ruby’s realm and the demons that exist inside is present, and is pulled open by Jean
A follower of Cyttorak notes that Cain would need all 8 gems to reach Cyttorak in the Crimson Cosmos
Energy Manipulation
It’s stated in the Official Marvel Handbook that the Gem of Cyttorak, when used by Stevie, granted not Juggernaut powers, but energy manipulation powers, explaining the various esoteric abilities it displays when used by him. There’s no evidence Cain could apply the ruby in this way, but it’s worth noting.
Miscellaneous
The inscription on the gem of Cyttorak mystically appeared to Cain as being in English
The call of Cyttorak reaches across the entire world, to the strong and angry who Cyttorak feel can be controlled, attracting them all to the gem. Colossus feels Cyttorak calling out to him, and sees the temple and gem in his head, realising it’s back on Earth
The ruby is noted as being durable enough to survive the heat of atmospheric re-entry, referencing when it survived being thrown into orbit by Cain and subsequently it remaining intact after it was knocked back down to Earth
Original Armour
The Juggernaut’s signature set of armour. Made up of an unknown metal from the Crimson Cosmos, it covers most of his body and offers an additional layer of durability to the Juggernaut’s already nigh-invulnerable body. Of specific note is the helmet, which makes whoever wears it practically immune to psionic attacks. Juggernaut can summon his armour to him at will, and can also manifest his helmet out of nearby material. The armour is stated to be literally forged out of the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, explaining its mystical properties.
During his time with the Thunderbolts, Juggernaut’s helmet was upgraded by an engineer at the Raft, making it more durable and allowing him to turn his head without turning his entire torso to look to his side. At first, removing the helmet seemed to remove the Juggernaut’s powers and invulnerability, making him much weaker, but this weakness seems to be dropped later on in his history, despite it also occurring with a child who had temporarily become the Juggernaut. It’s possible that Cain’s years of wearing the armour and absorbing its energies allows him to retain his strength even without his helmet, something suggested by the Marvel Handbook’s description, though this is only a theory.
At times, Juggernaut has worn a skullcap around his head, created out of scraps of his larger helmet. This offers a second layer of protection to mental attacks, ensuring he can resist them even if his helmet is removed.
Armour summoning
The mystical ruby of Cyttorak allows Juggernaut to summon his armour and helmet around him with just a thought. He later un-summons his armour and helmet and returns to his civilian clothing
Juggernaut wears his armour underneath his civilian clothing, and pulls his helmet from basically out of nowhere
Flexes into his costume from under his street clothes and pulls his helmet from out of nowhere
Juggs wears his armour underneath his coat, with his helmet on the back
Properties
Helmet
When his helmet is welded to his armour, it curtails his head movement
Juggernaut says his goodbyes to Sammy, and gives him his helmet as a memento. Cain still has it later, which could suggest he can somehow duplicate it
Cain can keep his helmet on the back of his armour to store it
Colossus can manifest and de-manifest his helmet at will whenever he summons the power of the Juggernaut
When amped up by the Trion’s dark energies, entering the giant Juggernaut’s helmet through the mouth leads directly into Cain’s psyche, an astral plane solid enough to deceive Wolverine’s hypersenses
Durability and Removal
Beast at one point managed to remove Juggernaut’s helmet, taking away his powers and allowing Beast to beat on him. That said, in a different instance, Beast was unable to remove Juggernaut’s helmet with his strength
Hulk removes his helmet and sends him flying. Hulk has also knocked off the helmet with a punch, and World War Hulk dented it with an uppercut
Juggernaut welds his helmet to his armour with a laser torch, preventing Spider-Man from removing it. Spider-Man later says that he once almost dislocated something trying to take the Juggernaut helmet off of Cain’s head
A direct hit to the helmet from Thor with Mjolnir doesn’t dislodge it. In a different instance, Thor punching it smashes it open, and Juggs has taken a direct hit to the head from Thor with his hammer, smashing open the helmet. That said, one of unworthy Thor’s hammers outright shattered against Juggernaut’s helmet with the helmet taking no visible damage
Juggernaut’s helmet is bolted on, and he says it takes him forever to get it off and on again, but Colossus later manages to rip off the helmet through its boltings. After Juggernaut was amped by Cyttorak to the peak of his power, Colossus’s blows to the helmet did nothing to him
Longshot’s spikes loosen his helmet, allowing Rogue to remove it
Wolverine slashes at Juggernaut’s helmet, freeing it and allowing Hulk to take it off. Wolverine’s claws in a different showing appear to leave a visible scratch on Juggernaut’s helmet, and at other points have scratched and pierced it completely
War Hulk’s advanced sword, given to him by Apocalypse, removes Juggernaut’s helmet
A blast of kinetic energy from Stonecutter, which almost destroyed his armour, knocks off his helmet
Polaris implies she could magnetically destroy Juggernaut’s helmet, though Juggernaut seems to rebuke the suggestion
She-Hulk hurts her hand punching Starkweather’s helmet, but Cain manages to grab and remove it
Takes a direct hit to the helmet from Skaar, who later seems to dent it with a punch
Endures repeated blows to the helmet from King Hyperion. Hyperion manages to remove Juggernaut’s helmet with his atomic vision and strength
Quicksilver uses his speed to blitz Juggernaut and remove his helmet
The Cosmic Ghost Rider’s chains, made of the bones of Cyttorak, remove his helmet
Skullcap
After Quicksilver removes his helmet, it’s revealed Juggs has a skullcap underneath which acts as a second helmet to block psionic attacks
X-Men Armour
This is the set of armour Cain wore after first joining the X-Men, while his power was diminished by Cyttorak. It resembles his original armour and is fashioned from unstable molecules. This armour is only ever described in handbooks, with nothing in the comics themselves saying Juggernaut’s armour had changed after joining the X-Men. During this period, Juggernaut’s armour is inconsistently depicted as being either grey or red like his original, which could be attributed to a change in the armour and its properties. As you can tell, the details are vague.
Crimson Bands Armour
Name unofficial. This new set of armour was donned by Cain after he had his power severed by Magik and the Crimson Gem was destroyed. It’s forged out of the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak on Earth, specially designed to maintain their cohesion. Most significantly though, this armour has no direct link to Cyttorak, meaning Cain’s power remains static and isn’t subject to the whims of Cyttorak. It grants Cain the standard superhuman strength and invulnerability, while retaining his unstoppable momentum powers. The armour has its own set of rules, and doesn’t necessarily share all the properties of the armour granted by the Crimson Gem. This armour is what Cain is currently wearing in the comics.
Cain arrives at the forge of Cyttorak, bonding with the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak maintained in this dimension to give him a new set of armour. Cain rejects Cyttorak’s offer to become his avatar and says he’s no longer linked to him, as his armour’s harness is made from the Crimson Bands that existed in the earthly plane
Cain can summon his new set of armour on the fly, manifesting out of his chest. He’s later shown de-summoning it at will
After being put to sleep, his armour de-manifests, though the Crimson Bands are still visible
The warden’s guards say that Juggernaut’s armour is composed of the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, and comes from another dimension through a portal. Juggernaut says they aren’t going to prevent him from summoning it as his armour is inside him now before manifesting it
Communicator
Cain has used some form of communication technology to speak with his allies over long distances on numerous occasions.
Powers
Power Fluctuations
As stated above, for most of his history, Juggernaut’s power is dependent on the amount of power he receives from Cyttorak, the demonic god he draws his strength from. Cyttorak has on multiple occasions either raised or lowered the amount of power Juggernaut has depending on whether Cain follows Cyttorak’s desire, namely causing as much destruction as possible. Juggernaut has had a loooot of fluctuations in power, some of which cover significant portions of his history, so the following is a timeline of all his notable ones
A dimension Juggernaut is banished to has a conscience, Oblivion, and restores Juggernaut’s youth in exchange for him losing his mystic powers. Juggernaut later says he lost his mystical powers long ago
For a period, Juggernaut was trapped in the Ultraverse, an alternate universe consisting of its own set of heroes and villains from a different comic imprint. It’s suggested multiple times that the abilities of Marvel characters are notably weakened while in the Ultraverse, and it’s outright confirmed that Juggernaut’s powers were weakened while on this earth in the Official Marvel Handbook. As Juggernaut re-enters the Marvel universe, he can feel the rest of his power returning to him. Feats from this period will be marked UV
Onslaught removes the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak from Juggernaut’s body, allowing him to knock Juggernaut out and seal him within the gem. Without the gem, Cain no longer possesses the power of Juggernaut, and so can be harmed. Later on, he’s empowered by Tar’s magic scorpion, infusing him with the energy used to seal Cyttorak in the ruby and rejuvenating him to fight off Cyttorak. Juggernaut claims the power is a hundred times greater than what he had before, and Cyttorak says he has the power of the ruby itself. Feats from this period will be marked A
Juggernaut is now rejuvenated, with his powers restored and stronger than before, and a later letters page also suggests Juggernaut is now stronger than ever, suggested to be wielding Cyttorak’s energies once more
When Juggernaut destroyed the gem of Cyttorak and freed himself and Spite, his soul became the vessel for its power. Therefore, when D’yspare feeds on his emotions, he feeds on the power of the ruby itself. It’s also said Juggernaut has outright merged with the gem of Cyttorak
Later during the Eighth Day event, Thor notes that Juggernaut is stronger than ever and that his might has increased “hundred-fold”, which Juggernaut says is true, and that something is making him this way and drawing him somewhere. It’s unclear if Thor is referring to the power amp Juggernaut got from merging with the Gem of Cyttorak or if this is a new power boost Cyttorak gave specifically for the arrival of the Octessence’s Exemplars. Cyttorak implies this is moreso due to Cain releasing his humanity than an actual amp, which could suggest it’s more akin to a state of mind than anything else, though the Marvel Handbook says Cyttorak increased Cain’s power, so it’s uncertain
A fake gem of Cyttorak drains all of Juggernaut’s energy and leaves him nearly powerless and sick, with only occasional flashes of power. He ultimately has his power returned to him when Gambit recovers the gem in Korea and gives it to him, but reabsorbing his power from the gem leaves Juggernaut possessed somehow by the dark aspect of the Trion, more powerful than ever and going on a seemingly mindless rampage. This state is commonly known as Trion Juggernaut. Freeing Juggernaut from his possession causes him to return to normal, and releases an explosion of Cyttorak’s energies
What exactly the Trion’s possession did to Juggernaut is never really confirmed. About the only indication there is is that it’s stated Juggernaut now has “all Cyttorak’s destructive might”, suggesting that by possessing him, the Trion were tapping into a much larger pool of Cyttorak’s power than normal. During this period, Juggernaut displayed several abilities he’s never shown before or since, and it’s unclear if he could access them on his own if he were to draw on enough of Cyttorak’s magic, or if they’re moreso linked to the Trion themselves. I’ve just noted them for the sake of comprehensiveness
In probably Cain’s most extensive fluctuation in power, he spent most of the 2000s getting continuously weaker. The first indication of this is Black Tom describing Cain’s powers as “a dim shadow of what they once were”, and Wolverine noting that Juggernaut was bleeding and being restrained by Black Tom’s vines, and so believes he can now drown (note that Nocturne later indicates that Juggernaut can drown as well, so it’s consistent). A blurb also says that Juggernaut’s powers have been weakened, with Cyttorak even granting Juggernaut’s powers and armour to someone else, Ed Starkweather, for a brief time. The only indication of specifically how much weaker Cain had become is him saying he has maybe half the power of Starkweather in their battle, while Starkweather had taken the role of the new Juggernaut. Cain later notes how his blessing from Cyttorak was running empty when he first joined the X-Men, and how he was weak at the time.
The exact reason for why Juggernaut had become so much weaker is only given years later in New Excalibur, after Juggernaut laments his loss of power and a summary page describes how Juggernaut has recently not been feeling as strong and unstoppable as he once was. It’s stated how the gem of Cyttorak’s power has been weakening ever since Juggernaut became a good guy, and Cain describes how his power is weakening every day, as he refuses to do Cyttorak’s bidding. Cyttorak chose Cain as his agent of destruction for his anger, and due to Cain’s disloyalty, Cyttorak must seek out a replacement. Basically the idea is that Cyttorak has been weakening Cain more and more as he acts as a hero, which goes against Cyttorak’s desire for the Juggernaut to cause as much destruction as possible, the loss in power acting as a punishment for Cain’s disloyalty. Feats from this era will be marked B
The initial explanation given for Juggernaut’s weakening is that, after Cain defeated Cyttorak, his power began to wane, and he thinks Cyttorak is taking that power back. It’s unclear if this battle with Cyttorak is referring to Juggernaut’s previous encounter with Cyttorak after he was sealed in the Crimson Cosmos by Onslaught, or to an off-screen encounter between comics prior to joining the X-Men. This explanation is pretty vague and is also contradicted by the later explanation of Cain being weakened due to acting against Cyttorak’s desires. The Marvel Handbook explains it as Cyttorak “gradually” weakening Cain for opposing him during the Eighth Day event, sometime after Juggernaut’s appearance in Cyclops Volume 1, with no mention of this battle with Cyttorak. It’s possible Cain is just lying or exaggerating here, as he’s known to do
Some of the handbooks claim Cain retained “most of his power” when Cyttorak sought a new host after the Eighth Day. This is inconsistent with most statements and showings from the comics. It may just be referring to his actual powerset as opposed to his literal strength
Cain finally recovered back to full power during the events of World War Hulk. After getting bloodied and beaten down by World War Hulk, the Gem of Cyttorak speaks to Cain, and says that it’s Cain’s own weakness and lack of focus which weakens him. Cain grabs the gem and embraces his role as the Juggernaut, empowering him and giving him his armour in exchange for no longer acting as a hero. Xavier later notes that Cain is “drawing on the full power of Cyttorak again”, and that he’s abandoned his attempt at reforming and has gone back to being the Juggernaut. A guidebook also claims he recovered his "full power". Feats from this period will be marked C
For a very brief period, Juggernaut acted as Captain Universe, the Enigma Force residing in his body alongside Cyttorak before it left and he returned to normal. It’s later stated that him taking Captain Universe’s power seems to have interrupted or ticked off Cyttorak, and Juggernaut ends up weakened for a period of time. This manifests not just strength-wise, but abilities wise. It’s said that Juggernaut has lost a lot of his ability, requiring air, being able to drown, and needing more space to get into a full kinetic run, alongside being unable to regenerate or burn out his nanites. Feats from this period will be marked D
The above period ended when Juggernaut touched the Hammer of Kuurth, upgrading him into Kuurth, Breaker of Stone, and a servant of the Asgardian Serpent, Cul, while also burning out his nanites. Upon finding out Cain was now serving another god, Cyttorak was pretty displeased, and depowers Cain after Magik reveals it to him, completely removing his Juggernaut powers with a magical bolt of lightning. In Cain’s place, Colossus touches the Gem of Cyttorak and is chosen to become the new Juggernaut. This lasts for about a year. Feats performed by Colossus as the Juggernaut will be marked as [Colossus]
Note that Colossus’s Juggernaut powers are not something he is always using. Colossus can “tap” demonic Juggernaut energies, suggesting it’s something he has to manually activate, and the Juggernaut is depicted almost like an alternate personality Colossus has to control. Colossus summons the Juggernaut’s power if the situation calls for it, drawn as the helmet manifesting around his head
Eventually, Colossus confronts Cyttorak in the Crimson Cosmos, and says since he is host to both Cyttorak and the Phoenix Force, Cyttorak should excommunicate him. Cyttorak refuses, as Colossus is his favourite avatar in thousands of years, having brought him more destruction than he could have hoped for, which is why he has given Colossus so much. This could suggest Colossus was granted more energy from Cyttorak than normal, though it’s unclear, and Colossus’s showings as the Juggernaut definitely aren’t as good as Cain’s on the whole
Cain soon lost the power of Kuurth, and Colossus’s link to Cyttorak was eventually severed, turning him back to normal and leaving no Juggernaut active on Earth. After being depowered, Cain Marko became the Raft’s weakest prisoner, not even rating a special defence, but for a brief period of time, Man-Thing connected Cain to a universe where Cyttorak lives but Cain Marko has died, allowing him to establish a new connection with this alternate Cyttorak and become the Juggernaut once again, summoning his armour around him. These powers seem to eventually fade somewhat, but Cain later says he says he still has his power, and is going to run as far as he can before he loses it. Feats from this period will be marked E
When Cain is next shown, he’s depicted as being a normal dude who isn’t the Juggernaut anymore. Despite this, he still has some extremely superhuman physical feats that blatantly suggest he’s still empowered to some degree. This is never really explained, but the best I can think of is that the Marvel Handbook explains that, even after being stripped of Cyttorak’s power, Cain still retains some superhuman strength and durability due to years of absorbing Cyttorak’s energy, in reference to period B listed above. It’s possible the same applies here, explaining why Cain is so strong even without a link to Cyttorak or his armour
Cain eventually stops being the Juggernaut again and lives out a peaceful life in Utah as a farmer. When he hears the Gem call out across the world, he rushes over to Korea to destroy it, but it’s touched by Ahmet Abdol, the Living Monolith, before he can do so, and so Abdol (briefly) becomes the new Juggernaut, described as being “more powerful than ever”. Feats performed by Abdol will be marked [Living Monolith]
After Abdol becomes the Juggernaut, Colossus realises Cyttorak will soon grow bored with the destruction his new avatar causes, and tells the demon that humanity will never kneel to him, and he knows it. He instead offers a new game, offering to become the Juggernaut again and asking Cyttorak to give him enough power to kill Cyttorak himself, more power than ever before, as the ultimate show of destruction. Cyttorak accepts the deal, but gives the power to Cain instead, making him the Juggernaut once more. Cain arrives back on Earth, and says Cyttorak gave him more power than he’s ever given anyone, enough power to kill Cyttorak himself as was promised. Cain says every weakness he had is now gone, shown by Rachel being unable to read his mind even without his helmet. This is probably the Juggernaut’s most powerful period. Feats from this period will be marked F
When he next shows up, the whole “enough power to kill Cyttorak” plotline is completely dropped and is never addressed, with Cain appearing notably less powerful than what was initially hyped up when he returned to being the Juggernaut. For instance, it’s implied he’s vulnerable to mental attacks without his helmet in a later comic by the presence of his skullcap, despite the fact that it’s made clear that Cain was now immune to mental attacks even without his helmet when he first obtained his new power, and it’s even suggested he’s back to needing to breathe later. It’s pretty unclear as a result if Cain’s showings in the comics after this are supposed to be the same level of power as above, and I personally think it’s likely that Cyttorak depowered him to an extent again due to Cain refusing to kill him per their wager. That said, there’s technically nothing confirming as such, so I’m grouping all these showings together regardless. Just something to keep in mind
Cain notes that since becoming Cyttorak’s champion again, he’s more powerful than ever, especially when standing in the temple of Cyttorak, and calls himself “Ultimate Juggernaut”, suggesting being within the temple amps him up. This would also be extra evidence that this period is when he’s at his most powerful. Cyttorak later tests Cain’s worthiness after he lost to the unworthy Thor by placing him in a spell where he sees himself having a battle with Cyttorak. Cain ultimately comes out on top and is deemed worthy by Cyttorak once more
Darkchylde Magik rips out the gem of Cyttorak from within Juggernaut’s body before crushing it, severing his power and turning him back to normal before banishing him to Limbo through a portal. Cain ends up sacrificing his armour to return to Earth, and bonds with the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak maintained in this dimension to give him a new set of armour. Cain rejects Cyttorak and says he’s no longer linked to him, as his armour’s harness is made from the Crimson Bands that existed in the earthly plane. Cyttorak’s ability to access the gem is gone and he has no links to any human hosts on earth. This is probably the Juggernaut’s most significant shift in power, as it completely removes his link to Cyttorak, meaning his power no longer varies, and his new armour has entirely different rules to his old one, basically changing his powerset permanently. New abilities and resistances displayed with this armour can’t be assumed to apply to Cain’s old powerset as a result. This is Juggernaut’s current state in the comics, and feats/abilities from this period will be marked NA (get it like “New Armour”)
Force Field
Initially, Juggernaut’s invulnerability was explained as being a result of a personal force field he has. This force field emanates around his entire body, and makes him practically impervious to attack. The force field can be turned on and off at will, and can even slow down incoming objects, halting their momentum, alongside being capable of pushing people back and breaking through objects. At first the force field served as the reason for Juggernaut's immense durability, with there being some suggestion he was still superhumanly durable without it. The force field slowly gets referenced and used less and less over the course of Cain’s history though, with its last explicit mention in the comics being in 2001, and numerous showings later that suggest the Juggernaut doesn’t have a constant protective barrier around him. In its last seen appearance, it appears to be something Cain does not always have on, which must be manually activated. This makes it kind of unclear which feats in the Juggernaut’s early days are a result of his natural durability or a result of his force field.
The Official Marvel Handbook reconciles all this by explaining the force field is something Juggernaut must manually turn on, and acts as essentially a second layer of durability to the Juggernaut’s already impressive physicality. It also basically confirms that the Juggernaut does not always have his forcefield on later in his history. Because of this, I’ll only mention durability feats which explicitly attribute Juggernaut’s endurance to the force field as being a feat for the forcefield later on.
Juggernaut’s forcefield halts and reverses the momentum of a 10-ton steel roller
Juggernaut’s forcefield isn’t constant, and Juggernaut can manually turn it on
Juggernaut’s forcefield slows down and halts the momentum of Mjolnir after being thrown by Thor
Unstoppability
Probably Juggernaut’s most iconic trait is his unstoppability. This manifests in the form of his un-haltable momentum. The Marvel Handbook states that once Juggernaut gains momentum, “virtually no force on Earth can stop him”, with an earlier edition stating that once he begins walking in a certain direction, nothing has been observed to stop him, and that only he can stop himself. This has also been stated in the comics, with Raft scientists describing it as Juggernaut drawing on “endless kinetic power” from Cyttorak. This means Juggernaut’s momentum can be slowed or redirected, but it takes extremely powerful forces to outright stop or reverse his movement. It’s suggested that Juggernaut can normally initiate his charge practically instantly, as during a period where his power was weakened, it’s highlighted how he now takes longer to build up his charge and become truly unstoppable.
Juggernaut’s momentum serves as one of his greatest powers, but also one of his most notable weaknesses. Juggernaut needs a solid foothold to initiate a charge in the first place, so if he’s stuck on a surface that isn’t solid, he won’t be able to move or change direction. Likewise, Juggernaut’s charge has been redirected on multiple occasions, either by pushing him to the side or by exploiting his leverage. This can send Juggernaut careening off in the wrong direction, which can cause him to crash or can remove him from the battlefield entirely. Still, Juggernaut compensates for this by being very adept at climbing and digging, meaning he can usually return to the battlefield quickly enough.
Charge
Any of these showings should double as power/durability feats.
Breaks through a wall which is stated to have 50 times the tensile strength of battleship steel
Walks straight through a massive net of Spider-Man’s webbing
Even without his helmet or skullcap, barrels through a building
Thunderstrike collapses trying to stop the Juggernaut’s march
Bruce Banner notes that once the Juggernaut starts moving, he can’t be stopped
Charges right through and splatters a monster mutated by the Terrigen mists
Charges down through a sewer system, through 1.3 kilometres straight of bedrock
Juggernaut charges into a massive lobster monster, smashing right through it
Charges through some Frost Giants, dismembering them, and later does so again
Charges and leaps right through Quicksand’s giant sand body NA
Juggernaut begins charging, with Magik portalling him mid-charge into the air to make him basically a dive bomber. His impact greatly damages the dragon Sadurang and returns him to his human form, setting church bells ringing for miles in every direction and creating a massive crater. Sadurang notes that not even Thor hits as hard NA
Juggernaut charges into the dragon Sadurang’s stomach, harming him. Sadurang notes that the magic of Cyttorak is what allows him to harm him NA
Charges into the Shuma Gorath-empowered Kulan Gath, slamming him into a tree NA
Juggernaut’s charge devastates a large swath of forest. Xavier describes it as flattening half the island NA
Endures Thor’s Godblast, though it begins pushing him back. He’s unable to regain his forward momentum before the floor underneath him collapses
Pushes back War Hulk, leaving a massive trail across the desert. War Hulk ultimately manages to stop and interrupt Juggernaut's charge, tossing him away
The X-Men are unable to slow the giant Juggernaut’s advance in any way. Juggernaut’s advance is only stopped by a giant interdimensional monster summoned by Nightcrawler, which grabs him from behindTrion
[Colossus] Colossus notes that Kuurth is more powerful than him in all ways except one, that being that Kuurth cannot stop his charge. Colossus’s charge accelerates up to 600 mph, travelling 60 miles from San Francisco in five minutes as he carries Kuurth with him. Colossus eventually manages to stop his charge after Kuurth is teleported away
[Colossus] Colossus charges Thing outside of the blue area of the moon, skidding along the ground
Note that the Project: Wideawake RPG handbook describes what would happen if Juggernaut were to charge into the Blob. It claims that, while Blob would not be moved, Juggernaut would win by ripping up the ground beneath him if it took place on anything less than an adamantium planet, and that this would probably take several hours. Not explicitly canon, but it is pretty interesting.
Climbing and Digging
Spends years digging out of a mountain, later stated to have been a decade
Digs his way back to the deck of a cruise ship after falling off
Digs out from the ground after being pulled underground by Krakoa’s rootsNA
Water/Loose Material
Due to his weight, Juggernaut sinks like a rock in water, and requires time to haul himself up
Is very briefly subdued by Iceman flooding him, before bursting out of the water
Sinks to the bottom of the ocean floor, and begins walking to Manhattan
Sinks in quicksand, but bursts out after reaching the bottom
Juggernaut falls into a 40-feet deep pit of wet cement, sinking to the bottom. Juggernaut busts out eventually, but it takes him out of the fight, and he’s buried in it for 6 months straight
Is buried under an ice lake by Cyclops, though he quickly digs himself out
Swims into the ocean to rescue Songbird and Moonstone (note that this while he was with the Thunderbolts, meaning he required air to breathe at this time)
Weaknesses
Speedball notes that he can’t stop Kuurth’s momentum, so he instead adds to it, causing Juggernaut to charge well over the town (Kuurth is obviously heavily amped compared to normal Juggernaut, but it’s still an indication of how the mechanics of his charge works)
Colossus outmanoeuvres Juggernaut and manages to smash the ground beneath him, sending him hurtling off a cliff and into the ocean below. Juggernaut is taken out of the fight, though he manages to dig his way out of the ground eventually. Note that this is Juggernaut while he was amped to be at his most powerful by Cyttorak, showing that these weaknesses remain consistent for him even with his fluctuations
Juggernaut begins charging at Sinister, but Sinister telekinetically swings him high into the sky
Endurance
Juggernaut’s stamina is essentially limitless. He does not need to breathe (outside of times when he’s been reduced in power), eat, or sleep, sustained entirely by Cyttorak’s mystic energies. This allows him to keep on moving for years on end, or to live out entire lifetimes without sustenance. It also makes tiring him out basically an impossibility in combat, ensuring he can keep getting up no matter what. That said, while he does not need sustenance, he can still feel suffocated, thirsty, and hungry, moreso mentally debilitated than anything. Given Juggernaut has enough willpower to spend years digging with no freedom in sight, he’s certainly tenacious enough to overcome it.
Juggernaut also boasts a notable healing factor, allowing him to quickly recover from small injuries with Cyttorak’s energies. Combined with his invulnerability, it makes him very difficult to truly put down or incapacitate. It’s been suggested a few times that Juggernaut’s endurance is fuelled by his rage and hate alone. His hatred has enabled him to endure the effects of a dimension forcibly ageing him (see the next section), or to keep fighting even when reduced to just a skeleton.
Stamina
Spends several years straight digging out of a mountain, also stated to have been a decade
Juggernaut is trapped in a block of cement by Spider-Man. He says he doesn’t need to breathe and can bust out eventually, but is trapped for six months
In space without his helmet, Juggernaut can still breathe, and claims he’ll eventually find his way back to Earth. When he returns, it’s said Juggernaut was lost in space without food for two months
Even after being depowered, Juggernaut spent 30 days hauling his armour across Limbo, barely strong enough to carry it, before arriving at the Crossroads and sacrificing his armour to return to Earth. He emerges from Limbo in a heavily weakened condition
Healing Factor/Resilience
Resuscitates himself after having no pulse and having stopped breathing
Even after having his power drained, through his hate, he keeps operating and fighting after being reduced to just a skeleton by D’yspare. After Spite returns his power to him, he’s fully restored back to flesh and blood. Note that while reduced to a skeleton, both Juggernaut and Spite suggest the latter could kill him in this state, suggesting it’s the upper limits of his endurance/regeneration
[Colossus] Colossus feels his skull crack with a swing of Kuurth’s hammer, but says it doesn’t seem to matter
Miscellaneous
A series of unrelated mystic events and Juggernaut’s own hatred allow him to manifest on Earth while trapped in Oblivion, though he is soon pulled back to Oblivion through a portal again
Cain is so heavy him moving could shift the balance of a mass of wreckage
Bruce Banner notes that while Skaar’s powers are based on science, Juggernaut is powered by magic
The amped Juggernaut tears through the fabric of space-time itself, opening holes in reality and smashing through dimensional barriers. Juggernaut tears through every dimensional barrier more quickly than the lastTrion
[Colossus] Now empowered as the Juggernaut, Colossus warns Kitty that touching his skin may sear her fingers
Mystic Powers
After being banished to the Crimson Cosmos, Juggernaut learned some mystical powers that gave him outright magical abilities. He soon lost these abilities, trading them away for his restored youth with Oblivion, and I don’t think they’d be considered standard or viable to use, but they are interesting to note.
Juggernaut’s mystic skills allow him to hear a voice in his head communicating with him
Can sense Beast’s emanations, and follows Beast by sensing these emanations
The dimension Juggernaut was banished to has a conscience, Oblivion, and restores Juggernaut’s youth in exchange for his mystic powers, so he no longer has them
Demon Form
During Colossus’s time as the Juggernaut, he would occasionally lose himself to his inhibitions and morph into a powerful, demonic-looking form. The specifics of it are never really explained, but it appears to make him notably stronger and more violent. No explanation is ever given for why this happens or what causes the form, and it’s difficult to say if other people who serve as the Juggernaut like Cain Marko have access to this form as well. The best explanation I can give is that it’s possible that, since Cyttorak considers Colossus his best avatar in a millenia, Colossus gains this from a strengthened link to Cyttorak. I wouldn’t assume Cain has access to this form, but it’s worth noting.
Cyttorak
Cyttorak is the extra-dimensional demonic being the Juggernaut draws their power from. Cyttorak is described as a “multi-dimensional” deity, a god who was banished to the dimension of the Crimson Cosmos in a battle with the Iron Fist Li Park and the sorcerer Xun. He’s obsessed with being known and worshipped on Earth, and so creates avatars of his power on the planet through the Gem of Cyttorak to spread their influence and recognition, namely by causing as much destruction as possible. Cyttorak can empower and de-power the current Juggernaut on a whim, from just reducing their power to outright taking the role of Juggernaut from them.
Cyttorak manifests in both a destructive, malevolent “aspect” and in a more godlike, aloof aspect. How exactly that works or what it means isn’t really specified, even by the handbooks, but the red demonic Cyttorak who’s typically seen seems to be the destructive aspect, while the more humanoid one is the godlike aspect. Notably, both have been shown existing in the Crimson Cosmos, and Cyttorak in his humanoid form has suggested he’s not truly the “overly humanoid form” he wears from time to time. The following are all the miscellaneous showings Cyttorak has, which, while not directly relevant to Cain, are interesting to cover.
Cyttorak created the demon Xorak, and a race of “elf-like” beings to worship him
Juggernaut attacks Cyttorak and seemingly defeats him, but it’s revealed to be a ruse. As Cyttorak is the source of Juggernaut’s powers, the moment the latter attacked him, he was enfeebled and became weaker and weaker, showing Cyttorak can depower Juggernaut on a whim
It’s suggested Cyttorak could possess Juggernaut and take over his body on Earth
Cyttorak, alongside the rest of the Octessence, created a totem of his power millenia ago that contained a fraction of his power, turning any human who touched it into an exemplar, a living embodiment of that power. Cyttorak tricked an order of monks into building a temple to contain it
Cyttorak forms a mystic barrier around the gem of Cyttorak to prevent Cain from accessing it and regaining his full power
Cyttorak’s destructive aspect is released from imprisonment when Peter Wisdom opens a mystic vault to free Merlin
A group of golem Juggernaut-lookalikes made from the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak fight off the Avengers, including bloodying Thor, and assemble a Morningspyre to broadcast the story of their creator. The creator is Cyttorak’s daughter, who found tribe with the ageless inhabitants of the Crimson Cosmos and learned to command the Crimson Bands
Hax Resistances & Vulnerabilities
Keep in mind that any feats marked NA are done in Juggernaut’s new set of armour, which has different rules to his old one as said above, so resistance feats performed in it may not apply to his old armour and level of power.
Mind Manipulation
Feats marked [Helmet] are done while Juggernaut is wearing his helmet. Note again that the helmet blocking psionic attacks only applies to Juggernaut’s old armour, and in his new armour (marked NA), his helmet offers no innate protection from what we’ve seen.
Positive Showings:
[Helmet] Juggernaut’s helmet blocks Rachel’s mental powers, as does his skullcap
[Helmet] Unaffected by Dazzler’s calming hypnotism, which works via light
[Helmet] Psylocke is unable to probe Juggernaut’s mind and sense his location
[Helmet] Juggernaut’s armour makes him invisible to psi-scans
[Helmet] Seems unaffected by D’yspare’s induced hopelessness
[Helmet] Juggernaut’s helmet protects him from Xavier’s psionic powers, and must be removed
[Helmet] Emma Frost notes that Juggernaut’s helmet makes him immune to her telepathy
[Helmet] Captain Universe says he was unable to probe Juggernaut’s mind for weaknesses due to his helmet
[Helmet] Emma Frost suggests Colossus’s Juggernaut helmet will protect him from Mister Sinister’s psychic attacks. He’s only controlled when his helmet is knocked off
[Helmet] It’s implied the helmet makes Colossus immune to Xemnu’s psychic powers
[Helmet] The young Jean is unable to shut down Juggernaut, and notes his mind is protected
[Helmet] Unaffected by Emma Frost’s mind-wipe of the X-Men. It’s unclear if Emma was actually targeting him, but with his helmet he’s later shown being unaffected by her mentally projecting her thoughts into the other X-Men
Cain willingly takes off his helmet, but Rachel still can’t read him, and says there’s something blocking his mind. Cain says every weakness he had is now gone. This is Juggernaut after being amped to the greatest degree by Cyttorak, strong enough to kill Cyttorak himself, so it would only apply at his peak
Negative Showings:
[Helmet] Mystically marked with Beyondersbane, which places him under Mephisto’s thrall
[Helmet] Bedlam mentally probes Cain’s mind
[Helmet] Captain Universe seems to take Juggernaut on a sort of vague mental trip through his head
[Helmet] Affected by a magical illusion, which makes him see people judging him
Subdued by Professor X’s mental powers, leaving him in a coma for months
Without his helmet or skullcap, is knocked out by a psionic blast from Psylocke
Without his helmet, is knocked out by a psychic attack from Rachel’s Phoenix
Knocked out cold by a psychic shockwave unleashed by the Hulk and Mentallo
Is affected and fooled by the mental landscape created by Onslaught
With the helmet but without the ruby powering it, is affected by an illusion cast by Spite. He’s affected again by an illusion of hers later, though he recognises it’s not real
Xavier claims Juggernaut’s psionic signature has never been difficult to track
Without his helmet, he is vulnerable to and knocked out by Bedlam’s psychic powers, shown again later
Without his helmet or skullcap, is taken out by Emma Frost’s telepathy
Without his helmet, is subdued by the Stranger filling his mind with cosmic truths
Without his helmet, is taken over and controlled by the Shadow King. Note that, given how he needed to lure Juggernaut away first and trick him into taking off his helmet, the implication seems to be that his helmet was otherwise blocking his control
Mind controlled and possessed by Kindred’s centipedes. Note that he has his helmet on NA
Affected by Forget-Me-Not’s powers, making him forget who he isNA
Affected by Switch’s mind-transfer, having his body taken overNA
Neutral Showings (Both Positive and Negative):
[Helmet] Stunned by a psionic blast from Psylocke which disrupts the neuron centre of his brain, even while he has his helmet on, though he quickly recovers and Psylocke notes she didn’t entirely succeed
[Helmet] Onslaught mentally blocks some of Juggernaut’s memories, forcing him to seek out Jean to break the mental block and dig them out. With Jean’s help, he manages to smash through the mental block applied by Onslaught in his head
[Helmet] Is initially affected by, but quickly manages to overcome, a telepathic assault from Bedlam, later becoming completely immune to her powers, suggesting his telepathic resistance can increase over time
[Helmet] Xavier is able to sense Juggernaut is alive, albeit not his exact location
[Helmet] While asleep, Cain’s helmet and the amulet of Cyttorak protect him against a psionic attack stronger than even Xavier’s, though it does wake him up and cause visible pain. The Official Marvel Handbook confirms that this was the effect of Mister Sinister’s Cronus device, with Cain’s helmet protecting him from becoming Sinister’s host body
Without his helmet, Cain is placed in a dream binding spell, which traps him in a mental landscape, but after having a talk with his own child self, he manages to break out of it and wake up. Note that the events of this issue are revealed to have all been in Juggernaut’s mind as a test for his worthiness by Cyttorak, so it’s unclear if this actually “happened” or not
Stated that as children, Cain somehow sensed Xavier was reading his mind. That doesn’t really make sense and it’s only explicitly said in a handbook, so take it as you will
Soul Manipulation / Possession
Positive Showings:
None notable
Negative Showings:
Neutral Showings (Both Positive and Negative):
Re-absorbing his power from the gem in Korea leaves Juggernaut possessed somehow by the enemy of the Trion, going on a seemingly mindless rampage. The entity possessing Juggernaut traps him in his own mind, showing him an illusion of his worst fears that Xavier and Wolverine have to help him break out of. Juggernaut manages to recover his powers in his head and defeat the entity possessing him in the astral plane, freeing himself from its control and power
Juggernaut is placed under a sort of spell putting him under Cyttorak’s control, interfering with Xavier’s attempts to reach him in his astral form. Juggernaut battles Cyttorak for control within his own mind. To avoid conflict with Cyttorak, Cain creates a simple psychic construct of his past within his mind. His growing rage while mentally battling Xavier allows him to regain control and dissolves the construct, and the now-dominant Cain defeats Cyttorak within his mind and regains control of his body
Touches the Hammer of Kuurth, which allows Kuurth to possess him. Even while possessed, Juggernaut still has some degree of control and influence. Cain is bonded to both Kuurth and Cyttorak, both of whom appear to bury his spirit. It’s said he could have used Cyttorak’s presence within him to resist Kuurth’s possession, but he chose not to
Matter Manipulation
Positive Showings:
Stated that Cyttorak’s mystical energy makes him impervious to all forms of injury, up to and including molecular disintegrations. Note that this is only in the earliest editions of the handbook, so it’s possible that it’s been retconned
Negative Showings:
Biological Manipulation
Positive Showings:
Barely affected by sleeping gas potent enough to affect a herd of elephants
In a retelling of these events, he’s affected by, but manages to get past, gas canisters strong enough to sedate a herd of elephants
Negative Showings:
Nimrod jams the transmission of neural impulses from Juggernaut’s brain to his body, paralysing him
Affected by Conquest’s pressure points. He gets up quickly, but it’s unclear if that’s due to him overpowering the effects of the pressure points or if that’s a property of Conquest’s attack
Knocked out by some sort of bullet fired by Vulture into his mouth through the helmet holes. It’s not really clear what it is, but it appears to sedate him
Affected and taken out by a heart attack induced via a reality warping mutant. Havok says he’ll be out for a few weeks at minimum
Luke Cage incapacitates Juggernaut by activating the nanites within his body
Subdued by King Hyperion controlling his nanites, causing him pain
Takes a slash from a Dirae, which are stated to induce “unimaginable pain”
Put to sleep by Valerian officinalis growing inside his body. As he sleeps, his armour de-manifestsNA
Power Nullification / Removal
Positive Showings:
Negative Showings:
The prototype ruby of Cyttorak takes away Juggernaut’s powers
Thor casts a spell that negates all mystical energies in the area, removing Juggernaut’s forcefield (it doesn’t remove his strength, but it doesn’t seem like the spell was targeting it)
Affected by the effects of the Ultraverse, which weaken his power
Onslaught forcibly removes the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak from his body, depowering him. The handbook states this severed Cain’s connection to the ruby
While unconscious, has his powers and strength temporarily stolen by Rogue
Taking Captain Universe’s power seems to either interrupt Cain’s link to Cyttorak or have ticked off Cyttorak, leading to Cain being weakened, with a handbook implying it’s the former
Takes a shot from Sin-Eater, allowing Sin-Eater to steal his powers
A blast from Cosmic Ghost Rider’s Power Cosmic weakens him. It’s said a few pages later that his healing factor is down, likely due to the Power Cosmic’s effects
Almost has the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak removed from his armour by some elite prison guardsNA
[Colossus] Now in her own domain, Magik uses her Soulsword to shatter Colossus’s enchantment, slicing Cyttorak’s bonds and removing the power of the Juggernaut from him. Colossus does later note that while Magik’s Soulsword was able to separate him from the gem, he’s unsure if it would work on the Living Monolith, but he attributes this to Monolith’s size and his own resistances, not any innate power of the Juggernaut that would apply to other avatars
Neutral Showings (Both Positive and Negative):
Energy Absorption
Positive Showings:
None notable
Negative Showings:
While in the Ultraverse, seems to have his energy drained by the Firewalker
D’yspare feeds on Juggernaut’s emotions, in-turn feeding on the power of the ruby itself as Cain is bonded with it, which weakens Juggernaut. Spite ends up draining practically all of Juggernaut’s power
Neutral Showings (Both Positive and Negative):
Stasis
Positive Showings:
None notable
Negative Showings:
BFR
Positive Showings:
This has literally never not worked on him
Negative Showings:
The prototype ruby of Cyttorak forcibly sends him to the Crimson Cosmos inside the gem, only pulled out of it later by one of Professor X’s machines
Banished to the Crimson Cosmos by the effect of Professor X’s machine. The Spell of Cyttorak prevents Juggernaut from returning to Earth
Eternity banishes Juggernaut to “Oblivion”. He’s later banished through a portal back to Oblivion even after briefly leaving
A series of unrelated mystic events and Juggernaut’s hatred allow him to manifest on Earth, but he’s soon pulled back to Oblivion through a portal again, so this probably wouldn’t apply normally. He’s returned to Oblivion for good and only escapes through a machine that returns him to Earth
Thor banishes Juggernaut to a distant dimension/asteroid (the details on if it was just in space or outright an alternate dimension vary, with the Marvel Handbook suggesting it’s the former)
Juggernaut has a symbiotic connection with the Crimson Cosmos, allowing Doctor Strange to summon him
Forcibly transported out of the dimension, banishing him to a world between worlds
Sucked into Xorn’s black hole and sent to the Mojoverse (though he allowed it to happen)
[Colossus] Magik takes the demonic Colossus and herself to Limbo
Telekinesis / That shit Magneto does
Positive Showings:
In a re-telling, is affected by, but breaks through, Jean’s telekinetic field
In a What-If story, Xavier as the Juggernaut is completely unaffected by Magneto’s magnetism, before crushing his helmet in his hands. This is arguably contradicted by the showing below, but worth noting
Negative Showings:
Magneto is capable of affecting and melting even Kuurth’s helmet, albeit he can’t stop the hammer in-motion due to it also being unstoppable. This is Kuurth, but Juggernaut should be weaker and so also vulnerable
Neutral Showings (Both Positive and Negative):
High-Frequency Sound
Positive Showings:
None notable
Negative Showings:
Affected and seemingly harmed by the Scream’s global sonic pulse
Affected and hurt by the scream of the Dirae, which causes ears to bleed. The helmet does not help
Neutral Showings (Both Positive and Negative):
Sealing
Positive Showings:
None notable
Negative Showings:
While banished to the Crimson Cosmos, the Spell of Cyttorak outright prevents Juggernaut from returning to Earth
The Frost Giants restrain Juggernaut with some magic bands and torture him
[Cyttorak] Gomurr and Tar seal the destructive aspect of Cyttorak within a ruby. A spell binds the aspect of Cyttorak to the inside of the gem, though not Juggernaut. Juggernaut is later infused with the energy used to seal Cyttorak in the ruby
Time Manipulation
Positive Showings:
None notable
Negative Showings:
Neutral Showings (Both Positive and Negative):
Spatial Manipulation
Positive Showings:
Negative Showings:

Phasing / Intangibility
Positive Showings:
Juggernaut reaches through Xavier’s astral self and pulls his physical form out of it. Note that this was during the Eighth Day event, so, as said above, it’s possible Cyttorak was increasing Juggernaut’s power
Negative Showings:
Life-Force Manipulation
Positive Showings:
None notable
Negative Showings:
Radiation
Positive Showings:
Luke Cage notes Juggernaut should be immune to the mutating effects of the Terrigen mists, and he seems unaffected by the radiation present in the cave
In a What-If, is immune to the radiation released by the Sentinels across the planet, which exterminates all humans and all mutants. A later letters page says that this is because his power comes from the mystical might of Cyttorak and is magical in nature, so it would take a huge magical force to stop him
Negative Showings:
None notable
Kinetic Energy Manipulation
Positive Showings:
None notable
Negative Showings:
None notable
Neutral Showings (Both Positive and Negative):
This doesn’t apply to Juggernaut normally, but I just wanted to mention the comic where Kuurth resists basically every single esoteric ability and plan Cyclops throws at him in a row, walking through it all without slowing down. Man that’s cool.

C - Juggernaut after regaining his full power against World War Hulk
D - Juggernaut while he was with the Thunderbolts, where his power was diminished again

There’s a supposed post by Marvel editor Tom Breevort which says Cyttorak is well above Zom and likely even above Shuma-Gorath depending on the circumstances, but this post is fairly old and a lot of these sites are down or unarchived, so it’s difficult for me to verify if this is real. I’ll update this if I ever track it down for sure

Scaling
Galactus: Juggernaut withstood the Godblast, which threatened a hungry Galactus. The consistency of this is questionable on its own, but Cyttorak is also stated in a guidebook to be strong enough to imprison Galactus, and Juggernaut at his peak was granted enough power that it was stated he could kill Cyttorak himself.
His battle with the Other and the Scrier threatened to destroy the entire infinite multiverse
In particular, note the comparison that Oblivion makes between their battle and the Chaos War, an event in which the Chaos King annihilated nearly the entirety of Marvel’s creation
Odin: Galactus and Odin once battled, with Odin notably seriously injuring himself with a headbutt to Galactus while Galactus got up soon after, suggesting Galactus as stronger. Odin admits he lacked the strength to keep fighting Galactus and had to transfer his conscience to the Destroyer to keep going
Sent shockwaves across every plane of reality in his battle with Seth
Fought Surtur and Seth, who can both destroy Yggdrasil, which exists in all planes of reality, of which there are infinite
Dormammu: Cyttorak’s magic is invoked for spells by the likes of Dormammu, suggesting Cyttorak wields a power greater than what Dormammu can manage on his own. Cyttorak and Dormammu also both attended the Devil’s Advocacy near Satan’s throne, suggesting they’re of similar rank, and Cyttorak is called possibly the most powerful magical being in the multiverse in a guidebook
Miscellaneous
Weaknesses
Juggernaut’s most consistent weakness is his vulnerability to telepathic attacks. His helmet may protect him, but once it’s removed, he’s usually quickly subdued by a psychic attacking his head
Juggernaut cannot fly, and relies entirely on having some sort of foothold to move. By removing his foothold and exploiting his lack of leverage, such as by tossing him into space, his enemies can render him basically completely helpless, removing him as a threat
Juggernaut’s charge is nearly unstoppable, but it can still be redirected or set off-angle, usually causing him to crash off the battlefield. In addition, he doesn’t boast any real space/dimensional travelling capabilities, meaning he’s very vulnerable to just being teleported or portalled away to somewhere else
Juggernaut has been briefly blinded many times (here’s a full compilation), whether by covering his eyes or through intense light, allowing his enemies to score some hits in or redirect him. He can compensate for this somewhat with his other senses, but it’s a pretty consistent weakness for him
Juggernaut’s helmet has a hole for the mouth, meaning precise enough opponents can fire projectiles into it, either to sedate him or just to distract him as he’s forced to spit out whatever he’s choking on
Juggernaut’s power usually fluctuates based on how much power Cyttorak grants him at the time, and Cyttorak can completely depower Juggernaut if Cain goes against his wishes too hard. While this is no longer a factor with Juggernaut’s new armour, which has a set power-level, it is an issue if one is considering Juggernaut at his peak
Despite his invulnerability and regeneration, Juggernaut is not immortal, and sufficient force can threaten his life and kill him. The Marvel Handbook notes that he’s particularly vulnerable to mystical forces of sufficient strength
Overall
As you can tell, that’s a lot of text, and Juggernaut’s power level changes a lot. Just as a quick summary to condense it for anybody who understandably got a bit lost, Juggernaut, when not specifically de-powered, frequently contends with and is compared to the likes of Thor and Hulk, Marvel’s two biggest heavy-hitters. He has a feat of tanking the Godblast when at this level of power, which could place him higher (while Thor was weakened during the period this happened, this typically manifested in bouts of weakness more than anything, and the Godblast is a different form of attack which Thor directly compared to the one that threatened Galactus and a Celestial).
While empowered further by absorbing the Gem of Cyttorak’s energies, he survived the explosion of the god-machine, which Thor directly compared to Odin in power, which could lend additional support for scaling. At his very peak, Juggernaut was granted enough power to kill Cyttorak himself, and so would likely physically scale to the demon, who has statements suggesting he’s relative to the likes of Galactus and Dormammu. Note that this most likely only applies to power though, as Juggernaut’s high-end showings are all power/durability based. You could argue he was capable of fighting Cyttorak evenly at one point, suggesting his speed is comparable, but this was specifically noted as being just an aspect of Cyttorak who was weakened when Juggernaut fought him, and Juggernaut didn’t even actually kill him anyways. It’s specifically said that Juggernaut being granted enough power to kill Cyttorak is greater than any amp he’s ever received before, which further suggests Juggs didn’t actually do much to Cyttorak in this fight.
While weakened during the 2000s, his best showings are probably fighting evenly with Sasquatch of Alpha Flight. In his new armour, his power level is no longer in-flux. Here he was stated to have impacted Sadurang even harder than Thor, which would suggest he’s relative in power to Thor, but he’s explicitly weaker than Immortal Hulk, which provides a cap on his power. He trades in his mental resistances for a couple of new resistances, but these are all mutually exclusive with his old powerset. He cannot have both his peak, Cyttorak-level strength and his new armour and its resistances at the same time.
